Turning a bond into a volume
Coverage comes down to geometry. A flat bond is an area spread to a thickness, so its volume is simply area × glue-line thickness. A bead is a cylinder of adhesive, so its volume is the circular cross-section times the length you run it. Once you have the volume in millilitres, multiplying by the adhesive’s density gives the mass — useful for weighing out a two-part mix or checking how far a tub will go.
The one number people get wrong is glue-line thickness. It feels small, but it scales the whole result: doubling the bond line doubles the adhesive. Keep it to the thin, even film most structural adhesives are designed for, and both your strength and your coverage improve.

How does the calculator work out adhesive volume?
For a flat bond it multiplies the bond area by the glue-line thickness — a 100 cm² area at a 0.5 mm glue line is 100 × 0.05 cm = 5 cm³, or 5 mL. For a round bead it uses the bead's circular cross-section (π × radius²) times its length. Both give volume; mass is that volume times the adhesive's density.
What density should I use?
Most two-part epoxies land around 1.1 g/mL, which is the default here, but it varies — filled and paste adhesives can be heavier, foams much lighter. Your product's technical data sheet lists the actual density, and using it makes the mass estimate far more accurate.
How thick should the glue line be?
Thinner is usually stronger for structural adhesives — many are strongest at a bond line of roughly 0.1 to 0.5 mm. Some formulations specify a minimum thickness to allow for movement or gap filling. Check the data sheet, since the glue-line thickness directly drives how much adhesive the area consumes.
Should I buy exactly the estimated amount?
No — buy a margin over it. The figure is a geometric ideal; real jobs lose adhesive to squeeze-out, mixing waste, uneven surfaces, and the bit left in the container or nozzle. Rounding up and keeping a little spare avoids stopping mid-bond with a half-cured joint.
Does bond area mean the whole part or just the glued face?
Just the actual bonded (overlapping) area where adhesive sits between the two surfaces — not the full footprint of the part. If only part of a face is bonded, use that smaller area.
