They are not a substitute for the adhesive manufacturer’s technical data sheet or for a qualified engineer, and they don’t certify that a joint is safe for any particular load or environment. For a structural, load-bearing, or safety-critical bond, have the design reviewed by a competent professional and tested before you rely on it.
How the Numbers Are Estimated
Each calculator applies a standard bonding formula or rule of thumb to the figures you enter — geometric volume for coverage, the mix ratio split for a two-part epoxy, area times shear strength for lap-shear load, the Q10 ≈ 2 doubling rule for cure time versus temperature, and load over shear strength for overlap length. These are idealizations. They assume uniform bond lines, even stress distribution, correct surface preparation, and the exact strength and cure behaviour quoted for the adhesive — conditions real joints only approximate.
Where a Result Might Not Fit Your Job
A calculator result is more likely to miss the mark if your surfaces aren’t properly cleaned and prepared, the adhesive is off-ratio, under-mixed, or past its shelf life, the joint sees peel or cleavage rather than pure shear, the service temperature or environment differs from the test conditions, or the substrate itself fails before the adhesive does. In any of these cases, treat the output as a starting point to verify by testing, not a final answer.
Follow the Technical Data Sheet
Every adhesive has a manufacturer’s technical data sheet (TDS) and safety data sheet (SDS) that give the authoritative mix ratio, pot life, cure schedule, strength figures, and handling and safety precautions for that specific product. Where our general estimate and the data sheet disagree, the data sheet wins. Handle resins, hardeners, and solvents with the protective equipment and ventilation the SDS specifies.
